What Is an Online Stopwatch?

A stopwatch counts up from zero and measures how long something takes. That is the opposite of a timer, which counts down from a duration you set. Use a stopwatch when the answer you want is "how long did that take?" rather than "tell me when time is up".

VClock's stopwatch displays hours, minutes, seconds and hundredths of a second in a large, high-contrast readout you can see from across a room. Lap times are recorded instantly with both the individual split and the running total, so you can compare each interval without doing arithmetic.

Understanding Lap Times vs. Split Times

These two terms get mixed up constantly, so it is worth being precise:

If you run four 400m laps and press Lap each time, the lap column tells you whether you are speeding up or fading, while the total column tells you your finish time. VClock shows both side by side, so you get pacing feedback and the final number at once.

Common Uses for a Stopwatch

Running and Swimming Training

Interval sessions live or die on consistent splits. Record a lap at the end of each repeat and the table immediately shows whether rep four matched rep one — the classic sign of a well-paced session versus going out too hard.

Gym and Home Workouts

Time circuits, holds and rest intervals. Many lifters underestimate rest by 30–60 seconds, which quietly changes the training stimulus; a visible clock fixes that.

Cooking and Experiments

Espresso extraction, steeping tea, science labs, reaction times — anywhere a repeatable process needs to be measured rather than guessed.

Work and Study

Track how long tasks actually take. Most people are poor at estimating their own working speed, and a week of stopwatch data usually makes planning far more realistic.

Public Speaking and Interviews

Rehearse a talk and check whether it fits the slot, or time answers in interview practice so you neither rush nor ramble.

Stopwatch Tips

Stopwatch FAQ

How accurate is the online stopwatch?

The stopwatch reads your device's high-resolution clock and displays hundredths of a second. For human-triggered timing, the limiting factor is your reaction time, not the stopwatch.

Can I record lap times?

Yes. Press Lap while running to record a split. Each lap shows the individual split time and the total elapsed time, with the newest lap at the top.

Are there keyboard shortcuts?

Yes. Press Space to start or pause, L to record a lap, and R to reset. This lets you time something without looking away from it.

Does the stopwatch keep running if I switch tabs?

Yes. Elapsed time is calculated from timestamps, so switching tabs or minimising the browser does not slow it down or lose time.

Is there a limit to how many laps I can record?

No. Record as many laps as you need — they all stay listed until you press Reset.

Can I use it for sports timing?

Yes, for training and casual use. For official competition timing, sanctioned events require certified equipment, but for interval training, swim sets and running repeats a browser stopwatch is perfectly adequate.

Does it work offline?

Once the page has loaded, the stopwatch runs entirely in your browser and does not need an internet connection to keep timing.

Counting Down Instead of Up?

The VClock timer handles fixed durations with an alarm at the end.
