About This 12 Minute Timer

The 12-minute Cooper test has been a standard measure of aerobic fitness since the 1960s, which keeps this a surprisingly popular duration among runners and coaches.

Twelve minutes is the exact length of the Cooper test, where you cover as much distance as possible — a reasonably fit adult manages somewhere between 1.8 and 2.4 kilometres. In the oven it is a typical batch of cookies, and on the page it is about 2,900 words of reading.

How This 12 Minute Timer Works

This page starts the 12 minutes for you automatically. Leave the tab open and carry on with something else; VClock keeps counting in the background and alerts you at zero with sound, a flashing display and a changed tab title. Use Pause if you need to interrupt it.

You can change the alarm sound at any point before or during the countdown — Beep, Digital, Alarm Bell, Chime, Siren and Soft Wake are all available, and each plays a short preview when selected. To use a different length, press Reset and type any duration, or pick one from the main timer page.

12 Minute Timer — FAQ

How does the Cooper 12-minute test work?

You run as far as you can in exactly twelve minutes, then compare the distance against age and sex norms to estimate aerobic capacity. Its appeal is that it needs nothing but a measured track and a timer.

Why do cookie recipes use 12 minutes?

Twelve minutes at a moderate oven temperature sets the edges while leaving the centre soft. Start checking at ten if your oven runs hot — biscuits carry on cooking on the hot tray after they come out.

Does this 12 minute timer start automatically?

Yes — the countdown begins as soon as the page loads, so there is nothing to press. If you would rather start it yourself, press Reset and then Start.

Can I pause the 12 minutes?

Yes. Pause holds the remaining time exactly where it is; Resume continues from that point and Reset returns the clock to the full 12 minutes.

What happens when the 12 minutes finishes?

VClock plays your selected alarm sound on a loop, flashes the display and changes the browser tab title. Press Stop Alarm to silence it.

Is this 12 minute timer free to use?

Completely. There is no sign-up, no download, no daily limit and no watermark — set it as many times as you like.
